Wonder Beat Scramble, also known as Micro Nauts, is a Japanese science fiction anime series planned and supervised by Osamu Tezuka in his later years. It aired from April 16 to November 19, 1986, on TBS-affiliated networks and was the first TV anime produced by the newly established Mushi Production after its bankruptcy. The series is notable for its live-action segments at the end of each episode, in which Tezuka, a Doctor of Medicine, explained human organs and physiological functions.

Plot

In 2119, the space life exploration ship Greensleeves encounters the wandering planet X23 and finds traces of extinct advanced civilizations on other planets X23 passed through. Two years later, his son Susumu, living in Nagisa City, is taken to the Phoenix Tower of the Institute for Comprehensive Health Science. Dr. Miya asks him to join the White Pegasus, a special medical unit that treats residents collapsing from unexplained health problems by injecting the micronized vehicle Wonder Beat into affected areas. The team battles unidentified aliens that repeatedly attack the human body.

Characters

Susumu Sugita is a 13-year-old boy living in Nagisa City with a compassionate and caring personality, who has faced a rough life due to accusations against his father. He joins the White Pegasus at Dr. Miya's request. Doctor Miya is the director of Phoenix Tower, a comprehensive health science research institute, and developed the Micronizer System to counter the HIEU (Vijur aliens) that attack the human body; he is invaded by them in the last episode. Mayumi, Dr. Miya's niece and the same age as Susumu, volunteers as his secretary and later becomes Susumu's girlfriend; her body is invaded by aliens in episode 14. Bio is a data accumulation robot that understands human language, thinks and acts autonomously, and searches for life cores of Medro Monsters inside the Wonder Beat. Li Mei Fang is a 22-year-old Chinese woman with a doctorate in medicine who commands units with calm judgment; she is invaded by aliens in episode 23. Michael Jansson is an American who handles EVA with Susumu and serves as a cheerful older brother figure before being transferred to the Engineering Bureau. Joe Kumba, from Congo, is in charge of mechanics and alien language analysis. Kōji Manaka, Bio's developer, handles mechanics and operations of the White Pegasus. Catherine Doyet, a French woman, works in operations, develops small Vijur detectors, and occasionally enters bodies. Tetsuya Aramaki, an excellent astronaut trainee, joins the White Pegasus after an incident to replace Michael, and is more skilled than Susumu at piloting and shooting. Princess Vijura, under orders from her father King Vijur, explores life elements but questions the hard-line policy of Zudar; she later meets Susumu, stays at his house, and learns that their intrusions cause severe pain to the human body.
