Story
In the year 2187, global warming has made Earth's surface uninhabitable, forcing humanity into domed cities. War and unstable land conditions cause the domes to lose contact with each other. Shu, a teenage boy from the school-type dome Datania, dreams of seeing the ocean. Datania is controlled by Zero, a data program, who with his human assistant Nines and later Berk, forces children to live as programmed drones through a reset system that strips them of emotions and instincts. Shu escapes with friends from Datania, aided by Ein, May, and Dolly of the Returners, rebels living underground. They seek Amaroute, another dome they believe is better. On the journey, Shu explores the outside world and joins the Returners in fighting Zero, who pursues DT, a special substance inside humans that Shu and his friends possess. In Amaroute, they find it is identical to Datania, also controlled by Zero, now assisted by a clone of Shu. Shu learns that both domes were built to construct a rocket to carry Zero into orbit before a generator preventing global flooding fails, causing a tidal wave. After Amaroute falls, Shu and his friends return to Datania to defeat Zero and save its citizens. The rocket cannot be completed in time, so Shu proposes converting it into an ark to ride out the flood. Work finishes and everyone boards, but a technical fault prevents launch as the generator breaks down. The tidal wave strikes before the ark is seen released, leaving the fate of Shu and all aboard uncertain.
