Story

Nearly two years after the war with Gatlantis ended, Desler discovers the planet Galman, whose conditions exactly match Gamilas and whose natives are identical to Gamilans, suggesting Galman is their original homeworld. Desler overthrows the Bolar Federation's tyrannical rule over Galman and begins moving the population of Gamilas there. An unknown force destroys Gamilas during the evacuation and warps the entire planet of Iscandar away. Earth has rebuilt the Yamato with Kodai as captain, leading a fleet that includes the support ship Asuka commanded by Yuki and the carrier Hyuga commanded by Sanada, staffed largely by fresh recruits. The fleet embarks on a six-month training mission and diplomatic visit to Gamilas, but upon learning of Gamilas's destruction and Iscandar's disappearance, Kodai disobeys orders to save Iscandar and the trapped Gamilas refugees. The Yamato fleet links up with Desler's fleet and learns that an alien civilization called the Dezariam is trying to steal Iscandar and its knowledge. Starsha reveals that Iscandar once preserved civilizations by destroying them and saving their memories into crystals, and that Iscandarians converted themselves into crystals to live eternally in their memories; they kidnapped people from Galman, transported them to Gamilas, and conditioned them to worship Iscandar. Desler, shocked but committed to saving Starsha out of love, engages the Dezariam in a final battle. Kodai convinces Starsha and Yurisha to escape while planting a bomb in the Dezariam mothership, destroying it.

On June 11, 2021, it was announced that the films would be a duology set after 2202 and a remake of the 1979 film Space Battleship Yamato: The New Voyage. The first film's subtitle and release date of October 8, 2021, were revealed alongside returning cast and new characters and ship designs. After the first film's premiere, the second part was announced for February 4, 2022.
