Tribes of Europa

Set in 2074, the German series *Tribes of Europa* follows three warring factions 45 years after a global tech collapse shattered nations into violent microstates. The story centers on the peaceful forest-dwelling Origines, the aggressive Crows, and the militaristic Crimsons, who aim to reunite Europe through conquest and force. When an Atlantian pilot crashes an advanced hoverjet in Origine territory, three siblings—Liv, Kiano, and Elja—rescue him, and Elja recovers a mysterious cube from the wreck. The Crows invade the Origine village to seize the technology, massacring most inhabitants. Kiano is sent to Crow slave factories; Liv is knocked out during the attack and later captured by the Crimsons. Elja escapes with the cube, pursued by Crows, Crimsons, and other powerful figures.

The series, created by Philip Koch, premiered on Netflix on 19 February 2021. In January 2024, Koch confirmed it was cancelled after one season.

The show prominently featured the World War II Monument to the uprising of the people of Kordun and Banija in Croatia. Filming closed the memorial to the public for months, with producers claiming permits from the Ministry of Culture and Media and the municipality. Critics condemned the use. Historian Donald Niebyl accused the series of "exotification and orientalization of Yugoslav architecture" and warned about decontextualizing sensitive memorials. Bojana Videkanić from the University of Waterloo expressed "strong disgust," calling the monument "a playground for the sadistic imagination" and citing broader political issues. In a 21 December 2021 article, Dubravka Ugrešić critiqued the "cheap Netflix series" for using Vojin Bakić's monument. Denis Derk of *Večernji list* asked if Croatia should be ashamed of the monument serving as a backdrop for a European apocalypse, while Jurica Pavičić of *Jutarnji list* called the dystopian landscape an unintentional allegory of modern Croatia. Aneta Vladimirov of the Serb National Council noted unease over profit-making at the site by producers with no emotional connection to it. Despite the backlash, the production crew cleaned the site, removing decades-old graffiti.
