Production

ABC renewed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a seventh season in November 2018, ahead of its sixth season premiere. Deadline Hollywood reported the early renewal was likely due to cast contract negotiations and would help reduce costs by filming the sixth and seventh seasons back-to-back. Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb said the crew had expected the shorter sixth season to be its last and were surprised by the renewal, attributing it to ABC seeing early work on season six and believing the crew had found another wave of energy. In March 2019, Loeb responded to rumors that the series would end with season seven by stating, We're not ending. However, at the San Diego Comic-Con panel in July 2019, Loeb announced the seventh season would be the series' last. He explained the cast and crew had originally expected the series to end with the fifth season and had put other plans on hold for the sixth; when ABC wanted a seventh, they agreed if it could be the final season. This allowed them to tie up any threads and create a satisfying conclusion. Although each episode received the same budget from ABC, the producers reallocated funds across the season to have backlot period costumes for early episodes and to save enough for the final episodes to go out with scope and style.

Marketing

The season's first look came at the D23 Expo in August 2019. In mid-April 2020, a teaser and poster arrived alongside the premiere date, with the poster sporting a vintage 1950s S.H.I.E.L.D. logo to reflect the time-travel plot. The main poster, released a week later, featured artwork by Kyle Lambert showing the main cast in costumes from various eras. Marvel specifically requested Lambert to mirror the series' actual costumes and sets. This poster promoted the season as "The Final Mission." Critics Jake Abbate and Sam Stone compared the design to the style of movie poster artist Drew Struzan.

Release

The seventh season began airing on ABC in the United States on May 27, 2020, and ran for 13 episodes until August 12, 2020. In the United Kingdom, E4 announced no plans to air season seven; it was instead released on Disney+, starting with the first two episodes on November 13, 2020, and the remaining episodes following weekly. The season began streaming on Netflix in the United States on October 30, 2020, and was available until February 28, 2022. It became available on Disney+ in the United States on March 16, 2022.

Reception

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 100% approval rating with an average score of 8/10 based on 15 reviews, with the consensus reading, Heartfelt and held together by the strength of its super cast's chemistry, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.s final season is a fitting farewell to a beloved team. Alex McLevy of The A.V. Club felt the season gave off strong Legends of Tomorrow vibes, describing it as a victory lap with a slightly more absurdist sensibility. Ian Cardona of Comic Book Resources noted that bringing Coulson back as an LMD and using Hydra as an antagonist brought the series back-to-basics while maintaining fun, allowing each team member to shine. Dave Vitagliano from Den of Geek said that even though season seven does not rank among the series' best efforts, taken as a whole, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ends its 136-episode run as one of the most successful science fiction superhero television offerings.
