Production
Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider spent a week in early 2016 developing the premise of The Other Two, a few months before becoming co-head writers for Saturday Night Live's 42nd season. They aimed to depict the introspection and self-doubt of twenty-somethings while incorporating pop culture elements, and intentionally wrote Chase as kind and innocent to subvert expectations. The pilot sold to Comedy Central in late 2016, and the series received a full order in October 2017. Production was handled through executive producer Lorne Michaels' Broadway Video. Charlie Gruet, director of photography for High Maintenance, was hired. The first season began streaming on HBO Max in 2021, making the series a Max Original. The second season premiered on HBO Max on August 26, 2021, with a two-episode release, and was renewed for a third season on September 24, 2021. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in June 2023 that the series would end with the third season. Drew Tarver, Heléne Yorke, Case Walker, Ken Marino, and Molly Shannon joined the cast in October 2017. Kelly and Schneider discovered Walker on Musical.ly, where he had over 400,000 Instagram followers. Tarver was cast based on his Upright Citizens Brigade work, and Yorke after her role on High Maintenance. Gideon Glick was announced in February 2020 for a recurring role in season two. Shannon was promoted to main cast for season two. Filming for season two began in early 2020 but halted in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resuming on February 22, 2021, in New York and Los Angeles, and concluding on May 9.
