Animal Kwackers

A costumed animal band with pop covers and original songs.

Between 1975 and 1978, ITV aired the British children's show Animal Kwackers, produced by Yorkshire Television. The series followed a four-piece pop band of costumed characters: Rory, a blue lion; Twang, a monkey; Bongo, a buck-toothed bloodhound; and Boots, a tiger. The format was similar to US hits The Banana Splits and The Skatebirds.

Cast for series 1 and 2

The first series of Animal Kwackers featured Nick Pallet and Geoff Nicholls of Principal Edwards as Twang and Bongo, while Tony Hannaford from G.T. Moore and the Reggae Guitars played Boots and Roy Apps played Rory. For the second series, Peter Eden took over as Bongo. In 1980, Pallet, Nicholls, and Hannaford signed to EMI’s Cobra label as the band Electrotunes.

Recorded music

The Animal Kwackers released a double album in 1975 on the Handkerchief label (catalog number KYD 201), featuring cover versions such as The Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" and "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" alongside original music including the main title theme and the "Rory, Rory..." interlude. A second double album, Let's Play Together (KYD 202), and a single album, Swinging on a Star (KYD 101), both followed in 1976 on Handkerchief.
