Characters

The residents of Housing Complex C include Kimi Shirokado, a cheerful nine-year-old girl whom the older tenants adore. Her mother never leaves their apartment, and Kimi seems to know more about the strange events in the complex than she reveals. Yuri Koshide, a ten-year-old girl from Tokyo, moves in with her parents and becomes Kimi’s friend, acting as an older sister. Yuri’s father, Seichi Koshide, works as a supervisor and consultant for foreign laborers at the Kurosaki fisheries, and his family has hidden reasons for moving to the complex. Yuri’s mother, Keiko Koshide, arrives with Seichi and his foreign workers. Takashi Takamura, an elderly professor living there, investigates the odd occurrences. His research costs him his sanity and leads to his death once he understands the full picture; he leaves a journal of his findings, which Kimi later gives to Kisou Kobayashi. Kobayashi, an elderly handyman, is Takashi’s friend. Another friend is Kentaro Yoshii, a retired security guard and former soldier. Mitsuko Momochi, a middle-aged woman, lives with her son Hideo, who is a hikikomori. Toshi Wada, a grumpy elderly woman, manages the building and holds prejudiced views against the Middle Eastern interns. Among those interns is Kanchan Mia, a large, brutish man who seems protective of Kimi and Yuri and is described as easily manipulated. Rubel Hossen, another intern, acts as the group’s translator. He later leaves the complex as tensions rise and discovers a connection to an ancient god.
