Premise and episode structure

The series follows Assy McGee, an ultra-violent and emotionally disturbed police detective with no upper torso, head, or arms. With his partner Sanchez, he patrols Exeter, New Hampshire, though the setting resembles a larger city. Cases begin with outlandish crimes, and Assy investigates by immersing himself in seemingly irrelevant matters. At the episode's end, a random bystander he has violently accosted is revealed as the culprit. The chief opposes Assy until his actions are validated, then asks how he knew, and Assy affirms his knowledge without evidence.

Characters

Assy McGee, voiced by Larry Murphy, is a walking lower torso with exposed buttocks. He is horribly violent, alcoholic, and clinically depressed, parodying 1970s/1980s movie cops like Dirty Harry and Lethal Weapon. His speech is slurred and gassy, similar to Sylvester Stallone, and he has an excellent ability to sing classical music. He quotes Stallone's characters, shouting 'I am the law!' in episode five and reenacting the Rocky training scene in episode seven. Detective Don Sanchez, also voiced by Larry Murphy, is Assy's partner and the good cop stereotype. He has a wife and three children, including a son named Rudolpho and a daughter named Giselle, and often unsuccessfully plays the voice of reason. He is highly tolerant of Assy's antics. Greg 'The Chief', voiced by Larry Murphy, resembles Al Pacino and is the police chief. He argues with Assy but is mesmerized when Assy solves a case. The Mayor, voiced by H. Jon Benjamin, is African-American, corrupt, and idiotic, obsessed with re-election and frequenting massage parlors under investigation for prostitution.

Development

Adult Swim picked up Assy McGee after co-creator Carl W. Adams pitched it, having previously worked on Dr. Katz and Home Movies. Scholastic executives halted production after six episodes due to the show's graphic violence, sexual content, and religious depictions, leaving those six as season one. Scholastic returned the rights to Adams, who then founded Clambake Animation in Watertown, Massachusetts, with André Lyman and Carrie Snyder. Assy McGee was Clambake's first and only project at the time.

Broadcast

Assy McGee aired in the 11:30 PM ET Sunday slot for its first season and in the 12:30 AM ET Monday slot for its second.
