Development and production

Before it aired, the show was called Animal Kingdom, and NBC ordered it in May 2012. Joanna García took over the role of Dorothy Crane from Amy Huberman, who played it in the pilot. Crystal the Monkey’s part was meant to be Dr. Zaius, but the name was unavailable. After three episodes were filmed, Marco Pennette became showrunner, replacing Gail Lerner.

Promotion

NBC promoted the show to ad buyers by noting that Crystal the capuchin had received powerful reception among test audiences and was perhaps the best-known element of the new show. A sneak preview aired on August 12, 2012, following the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics. The already tape-delayed and abridged broadcast was interrupted to air the pilot, causing the finale, which featured a performance by The Who, to be preempted after late local newscasts.

Reception

Metacritic gave the show a score of 48 out of 100, indicating mixed critical reviews. Drusilla Moorhouse of Zap2It wrote that it was too cringe-worthy for overempathizing animal lovers but might attract general audiences for lighthearted escapism. Robert Bianco of USA Today gave a negative review, stating that the fine human cast, including Kirk, was undermined by the barrage of stupidity the show sent their way.
