Amy Prentiss
A female chief of detectives faces opposition in San Francisco.
Amy Prentiss was a police drama on NBC that began with a two-hour backdoor pilot on Ironside, also set in San Francisco. NBC initially said no to making it a series, but strong ratings for the pilot convinced them otherwise. It ran as part of the NBC Mystery Movie during the 1974–1975 season, taking over for Hec Ramsey, but was dropped after just three two-hour episodes. Jessica Walter played the title character, a young investigator who becomes the SFPD’s first female Chief of Detectives after her predecessor dies. She is a single mother whose husband died in a plane crash, and she faces pushback from both fellow officers and their wives.
