Production
In 2018, Jared LeBoff approached Edgar Wright about a new Scott Pilgrim project. In early 2019, LeBoff asked Bryan Lee O'Malley about a Scott Pilgrim anime with Science Saru; O'Malley was initially uninterested in a straight retelling. In 2020, O'Malley and BenDavid Grabinski pitched a story that starts the same but deviates at the Patel fight, and Universal Content Productions and Netflix greenlit it. In January 2022, Netflix and UCP were reported to be developing the series. O'Malley served as showrunner, writer, and executive producer alongside Grabinski, with Abel Góngora directing. Edgar Wright and Michael Bacall were executive producers. Science Saru provided animation. In March 2023, the series was officially greenlit. On March 30, 2023, a cast announcement confirmed the 2010 film cast would reprise their roles; Wright helped convince them to return. Julian Cihi voiced both Katayanagi twins, replacing the non-speaking film actors. O'Malley and Grabinski updated elements from the comics, such as changing Ramona's job from Amazon delivery to Netflix DVD delivery and expanding the evil exes' backstories.
Reception
On Rotten Tomatoes, 96% of 50 critics gave positive reviews, with an average rating of 8.2/10 and a consensus praising the series for retaining heart and wit while carving a fresh path. Metacritic gave a score of 82 out of 20 reviews, indicating universal acclaim. Rendy Jones of RogerEbert.com said the show shatters expectations and reexamines its story with a twist. Alison Herman of Variety noted it combines innovative style and comic charm with a new spin for grown-up eyes. Maya Phillips of The New York Times criticized the narrative as bland and the jokes as lackluster.
Sequel video game
In a Rolling Stone interview, O'Malley said Netflix was unlikely to renew the series for a second season, and he confirmed in November 2024 that it would not continue. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ellen Wong expressed in February 2024 that they would reprise their roles in a hypothetical sequel. A sequel video game, Scott Pilgrim EX, was released on March 3, 2026.
