Production
After a successful summer test run, Deadline reported in December 2021 that Pictionary would receive a full season on Fox Television Stations and other outlets starting in fall 2022. Produced by Fox First Run and Bill Market & Television Production in association with Mattel Television, the show is distributed by CBS Media Ventures. By May 2022, the program had cleared in 90% of the country. On Fox-owned stations, it joined a programming block alongside Fox First Run’s You Bet Your Life with Jay Leno and 25 Words or Less hosted by Meredith Vieira. In January 2023, Fox First Run renewed the show along with five others for the 2023–24 television season, which premiered on September 11, 2023. In July 2024, a third season was announced, starting September 9 of that year. In January 2025, Fox First Run cancelled Pictionary after three seasons.
Gameplay
The 2022 version of Pictionary ran for two seasons and introduced its own set of rules. Each episode begins with a quick draw round worth 100 points, where a video shows someone sketching an item and contestants buzz in to answer. After that, teams take turns drawing. One player from a team draws while their two partners have 15 seconds to guess the answer for 100 points. If they fail, the opposing team can steal the points. This pattern repeats for two rounds, with the second round doubling the points to 200 per correct guess.
During a commercial break, each team picks three words for their rivals to draw, aiming to stump them. The drawing team gets 60 seconds to complete all three sketches, with each correct guess earning 1,000 points. They may pass on a word and return to it if time remains. The team with the highest score moves on to the bonus round. If there is a tie, a sudden death word is drawn, and the first team to guess it correctly advances.
In the bonus round, the winning team selects one member to draw. That player receives five classic Pictionary words or phrases and chooses three to draw within 45 seconds. The first two correct answers are worth $1,000 each. If the team gets all three right, they win $2,000 plus a trip, the destination of which is announced at the start of the show.
