Production
Chozen was originally slated as the debut original show for FXX, the new FX spinoff channel that started in 2013, but it ended up on FX instead, airing Monday nights after Archer. The show came from a team-up between the producers of Eastbound & Down and the producers of Archer. It got the axe after just one season on May 14, 2014. A DVD set hit Amazon on December 16, 2014, available only as a made-to-order disc set, and it included three episodes that had never aired before.
Characters
Phillip "Chozen" Cullens, voiced by Bobby Moynihan with singing voice by Grant DeKernion, is a 28-year-old white gay rapper. After being framed for crimes he did not commit, he survived a ten-year prison sentence and upon release sets out to reclaim what is his. His music targets stereotypes of machismo and misogyny in rap, but he is ten years behind in technology and pop culture. Crisco, voiced by Hannibal Buress, is a struggling rapper in his late twenties who previously entertained children with positive rap lyrics and lives rent-free as a gigolo. Ricky, voiced by Michael Peña, is a DJ and rapper who works kids' birthday parties with Crisco and ends his sentences with "...and shit"; he still lives at home. Tracy Cullens, voiced by Kathryn Hahn, is Chozen's college-aged sister who once dreamed of Olympic gymnastics and now attends Palm View University; she is disgusted by her brother's behavior and is the only character to call him by his given name. Troy, voiced by Nick Swardson, is a stereotypical gamer and nerd who wants to ask Tracy out but lacks courage. Hunter, voiced by Ike Barinholtz, is an openly gay college student and Chozen's former lover who pursues a real relationship while Chozen wants only sex; he leaves Chozen in the episode "Boy's Night." Idris "Phantasm" Florentine, voiced by Method Man, is the top rapper who framed Chozen for his own illegal activities, sending him to prison and sparking his own rise.
