Format
Unlike other singing competitions with celebrity judges, Rising Star treated the home audience as the judges, with celebrity experts influencing the vote. During each performance, viewers used a mobile voting app to decide in real time whether a contestant advanced. The expert panelists—Brad Paisley, Kesha, and Ludacris—each contributed 7% to a performer's total for a yes vote in the first six shows; this percentage decreased by 2% each subsequent show until the finale, where their vote equaled a home audience vote. Each performance began with the contestant singing behind a screen called "The Wall." Once the contestant reached 70% yes votes on either the East or West Coast, the wall rose and the contestant advanced. Contestants who passed auditions were paired by the judges for duels. In a duel, the first contestant sang with the wall up, setting a benchmark; the second sang with the wall down. If the second surpassed the first's total, the wall rose and the second advanced; otherwise, the second was eliminated. The losing contestant with the highest West Coast votes in each episode received a save and moved to the next round.
Results
During the first round, an expert's yes vote added 5% to the total; the eight contestants with the highest voting percentages, including the West Coast save, advanced, and the other five were eliminated. In the next round, experts' votes added 3%; the six highest percentages advanced to the semifinals, and the other two were eliminated. In the semifinals, experts' votes added 1%; the four highest percentages advanced to the final, and this was the last round where Pacific and Alaskan time zones could vote. In the finale, experts voted on their phones, their votes counting equally with home judges and kept secret; only Eastern, Central, and Mountain time zones could vote. Voting percentages are listed for Eastern/Central/Mountain time zones first, then Pacific/Alaska (except the final week). Blue numbers indicate the highest weekly percentage, red the lowest. A performer eliminated that week is marked; a performer initially eliminated but saved by the highest Pacific/Alaska percentage is marked; a performer saved by the highest combined percentages due to an odd number of qualifiers is marked. The winner, runner-up, third place, and fourth place are each marked.
