Production

In May 2022, the series was originally announced as a new original animated series for HBO Max and Cartoon Network. Cartoon Network Studios was later stated to be producing the series, and this was asserted again in 2024. An animatic premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2023. The first episode premiered at San Diego Comic Con TVfest on February 7, 2024. At the AfroAnimation Summit in Burbank, California from April 10 to 12, 2024, Gordon-Montgomery held a panel titled "How I Got My Show Made: The Underdog Story of Invincible Fight Girl". An early series preview was released on July 25, 2024, at Savannah College of Art and Design, including a talk with Gordon-Montgomery, art director David Depasquale, and supervising producer Bryan Newton. Sam Register was later described as an executive producer. Gordon-Montgomery told The Verge he wanted his love for pro-wrestling's Attitude Era to show in Andy's character and the series, noting influences from Pokémon, Naruto, and Hajime no Ippo. In an interview with Cartoon Brew, he discussed anime influences, development challenges, and limitations of a 10-episode season. The series premiered on Adult Swim on November 3, 2024, and on Max shortly after.

Reception

The series was positively received by critics. Rendy Jones of Den of Geek described it as a cross between My Hero Academia and WWE, praising its grounded narrative, world-building, and characters resembling wrestling culture figures. Jones noted the plot follows action-adventure anime conventions and highlighted Andy as a strong Black female protagonist alongside characters like Lunella Lafayette. Charles Pulliam-Moore of The Verge said the series echoes shōnen series such as Dragon Ball Z and One Piece, and argued its blend of influences comes together in the ring. Daniel Kurland of CBR wrote that the series could lead to more sports-based Western cartoons, praising the protagonist as empathetic and relatable, the animation as sumptuous, and the series for subverting class and gender norms while sharing a message of independence and strength. Kurland pointed to anime influences including Kinnikuman, Tiger Mask, Megalobox, YuYu Hakusho, and Dragon Ball, and compared the series to Adult Swim's Ballmastrz: 9009.
