The Fugitive Story and Its A-Team Roots

The narrative engine of Renegades is deceptively simple: a handful of American servicemembers stumble onto illicit operations inside a Cobra Industries pharmaceutical plant, and the fallout turns them into wanted criminals overnight. The media paints them as terrorists responsible for acts they never carried out, while both the U.S. military and Cobra's mercenary force close in. Their mission becomes a two-front fight—clearing their names and pulling back the curtain on Cobra Industries and its shadowy head, Adam DeCobray. What makes this incarnation distinct is its deliberate nod to The A-Team. Promotional material from The Hub highlighted these parallels: Roadblock mirrors B.A. Baracus in sheer physical presence and mechanical know-how; Flint, a Lieutenant rather than a warrant officer, is the officer tasked with hunting down the Renegades, echoing Colonel Lynch; and Lady Jaye, sympathetic to her old friend Duke, slips covert aid to the team much like Charissa Sosa or Amy Allen did in their respective A-Team stories. After the second episode, David Kaye's narration seals the tone, referring to the group not as heroes or outlaws but simply as "Ordinary Joes."

One Season, One Cancellation, One Long Silence

Renegades premiered on The Hub on November 26, 2010, and wrapped its sole season with the two-parter "Revelations" on July 23, 2011. Hub's public-relations team placed the series in a hiatus state, and no renewal news surfaced that summer. When pressed in January 2012 about a possible second season, executive Henry Gilroy offered a blunt answer: viewers probably would not see one. For over a decade, the reasons behind that quiet end remained speculation. It was not until January 2023—twelve years after the final episode aired—that Gilroy spoke publicly about what had really happened. He explained that creative friction with Hasbro was the root cause. The planned second season had grown stylistically and narratively close to the live-action G.I. Joe films, and Hasbro's corporate priority at the time was to funnel resources toward the upcoming theatrical release G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Rather than maintain a parallel animated property that risked stepping on the live-action brand, the company chose to let the series end. The result was a show that never got the chance to resolve its central conspiracy, leaving the Renegades' story hanging in the air for a full twelve years before the truth finally surfaced.

A Voice Cast That Carried the Weight

The animated ensemble of Renegades leaned heavily on a core group of veteran voice actors, many of whom also filled numerous supporting and background roles across the run. Charlie Adler took on Cobra Commander alongside a long list of extras including Buzzer, Monkeywrench, and various guards and troopers. Clancy Brown brought gravitas to Destro, while also voicing Truman and a whistleblower. Natalia Cigliuti gave Scarlett her voice, and Nika Futterman handled Lady Jaye plus a female reporter and a sheriff's clerk. David Kaye narrated the main title sequence beginning after the second episode and also played Professor Patrick O'Hara in the final two installments. Jason Marsden voiced Duke and Ripper, while also stepping into Trooper, Mitchell, a prison guard, and an intel officer. Johnny Messner brought Flint to life, and Khary Payton handled Ripcord. Kevin Michael Richardson was a particularly busy presence, voicing Roadblock, Road Pig, a computer voice, and a dozen or more walk-on characters. Charlie Schlatter covered Doctor Mindbender, Wild Bill, and Lift-Ticket, and Tatyana Yassukovich brought the Baroness to the screen.

Life Beyond the Hub: Discs, Comics, and a Slow Team Completion

After its brief broadcast window, Renegades found a second life through home video and digital platforms. Shout! Factory put Season 1 Volume 1 on DVD in June 2012, followed by Volume 2 and the complete season on Blu-ray in September of that year. Streaming availability shifted over the years: the show lived on Netflix from April 2012 until February 2015, then migrated to Tubi TV when Hasbro Studios' streaming rights were bundled to that advertiser-supported service. Today it can be watched on Amazon Prime Video, Plex, The Roku Channel, Tubi, and YouTube through the dedicated G.I. Joe channel. The franchise also extended into print and plastic. IDW Publishing released four 104-page comics adapting individual episodes, though they hit shelves out of order between January and August 2012. On the toy side, 2011 saw a wave of 30th Anniversary-line action figures covering Duke, Ripcord, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Tunnel Rat, Law & Order, Airtight, Cobra Commander, Cobra Trooper, Firefly, and Storm Shadow. The main Renegades team was not considered complete until 2017, when Roadblock arrived as a San Diego Comic Con-exclusive figure inside an IDW Revolution box set.
