Overview
Darlene, the eldest, works as a dog groomer and is recently divorced after her husband had an affair with their weight-loss counselor. Charlene, the middle sister, is a makeup artist for a commercial photographer and the most active of the three. Marlene, the youngest, is a former toll collector who later becomes an actress in a pantyhose commercial and a soap opera; she is portrayed as a naive dreamer. Charlene's boyfriend Ronnie Underwood, a restaurant owner, disappears at mid-season, leaving the sisters on the dating market. Their landlady Florence Newman then becomes a regular character. The sisters' physical comedy experience is used in episodes such as Charlene wearing a helium-filled dress, Darlene breaking a hockey stick at a New York Rangers game, Marlene waking the sisters with potato chips, and all three ganging up on a mime who mocked them.
