The alien kills a vacationing doctor, assumes his identity, and is asked to perform an autopsy on the town’s deceased physician. He eventually takes over the clinic. He struggles with his secret assignment while the mayor’s young son is the only person who can see his true form. Over time, he develops compassion for humans and ends up protecting them from other extraterrestrial threats.
The main cast includes Alan Tudyk as “Harry Vanderspeigle,” the alien who learns English and human behavior from watching *Law & Order* reruns. He possesses superhuman strength, shapeshifting abilities, and memory alteration powers. Tudyk also plays the real Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle, a corrupt doctor and assassin. In the first season, stuntman Keith Arbuthnot portrayed the alien’s true form, an androgynous Octopodiform-like being; from season two onward, Tudyk performed these scenes using a practical mask. David Bianchi appears as Goliath, Harry’s future self who travels back in time to save humanity.
Sara Tomko plays Asta Twelvetrees, the doctor’s assistant and a member of the Ute Native nation, who discovers Harry’s identity after Max. Corey Reynolds is Sheriff Mike Thompson, who calls himself “Big Black” and masks his insecurities by controlling situations. Alice Wetterlund plays D’arcy Bloom, a bartender and Asta’s best friend, who learns the truth after finding out the real Harry killed a man. Levi Fiehler plays Ben Hawthorne, the town’s mayor and a hobbyist candlemaker who has been abducted by Grey aliens since childhood. Judah Prehn plays Max Hawthorne, Ben and Kate’s son, who can see through Harry’s disguise and the green glow of his alien tech. Elizabeth Bowen plays Deputy Olivia “Liv” Baker, who has been fascinated by extraterrestrials since witnessing a UFO as a child. Meredith Garretson plays Kate Hawthorne, Ben’s wife and a former lawyer turned schoolteacher. Recurring character Jimmy, played by Ben Cotton, is Asta’s abusive ex-husband.
