Mobile Suit Gundam 00
A Gundam series set in the real-life Gregorian calendar.
Last updated
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 is the eleventh TV series in Sunrise's Gundam franchise. Unlike earlier installments, its timeline matches the real-world Gregorian calendar, set in the Anno Domini (AD) era. The story revolves around Celestial Being, a paramilitary group that uses four highly advanced mecha called Gundams to eliminate global conflict.
Release
The first season, directed by Seiji Mizushima with scripts by Yōsuke Kuroda and character designs by Yun Kōga, aired from October 5, 2007, to March 29, 2008, on MBS, TBS, and affiliated JNN stations. A second season ran from October 5, 2008, to March 29, 2009. A film sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer, premiered in Japan on September 18, 2010, with a DVD and Blu-ray release on December 25, 2010. This series was the first Gundam TV show animated in widescreen and high-definition.
Season 1
The plot begins in 2307 AD. After fossil fuels ran out, humanity built Dyson rings—massive solar power collectors—orbiting Earth, supported by three orbital elevators. Each elevator serves a power bloc: the Union (Americas, Australia, New Zealand, Japan), the Human Reform League (most of mainland Asia, Oceania), and the AEU (Europe, North Atlantic and Arctic islands).
This energy source only benefits the major powers, sparking constant wars among smaller nations over fuel. Countries that sold fossil fuels fell into poverty, and some saw solar energy as a threat to religion, leading to the 20-year Solar Wars. In response, the private military Celestial Being formed to end war using four Gundams.
The main protagonist is Setsuna F. Seiei, a 16-year-old Gundam pilot from the war-torn Republic of Krugis (based on Kurdistan). The three major blocs eventually unite as the United Nations Army to counter Celestial Being. They get help from traitor Laguna Harvey, who provides 30 GN-X mobile suits with pseudo-GN Drives.
A second Gundam team, Team Trinity, appears, fighting more brutally. Alejandro Corner, a former Celestial Being observer, takes over the supercomputer Veda (hidden on the moon) to exploit the chaos for his own rule. Without Veda's tactical aid, Celestial Being is overwhelmed by the GN-X units.
The UN Army launches Operation Fallen Angels to destroy the Gundams, targeting the mothership Ptolemaios. During the battle, Ali Al-Saachez kills Lockon Stratos. Alejandro attacks Setsuna in his custom mobile armor Alvatore, but Setsuna kills him. Ace pilot Graham Aker then challenges Setsuna, destroying the GN-Flag and heavily damaging the Exia.
Four years later, humanity forms the Earth Sphere Federation, which creates the A-Laws, an autonomous peacekeeping force above the regular army. The A-Laws are meant to unify nations and stop terrorists, but they secretly use brutal tactics to suppress freedoms. Setsuna tries to fight the A-Laws alone in his damaged Exia but is overpowered.
Season 2
Tieria Erde rescues him in the new Seravee Gundam. Celestial Being's engineers combine the GN Drives of the Exia and 0 Gundam to complete the twin-drive 00 Gundam for Setsuna. Lockon Stratos' twin brother is recruited to pilot one of the two remaining new units.
Background
The series is set in 2307 AD, after the depletion of fossil fuels led humanity to rely on Dyson rings and orbital elevators serving three power blocs: the Union, the Human Reform League, and the AEU. Constant warfare erupts among minor countries, leading to the formation of Celestial Being, a private military organization dedicated to eradicating war using four Gundams. The main protagonist is Setsuna F. Seiei, a 16-year-old Gundam Meister from the war-torn Republic of Krugis.
