Chimera (British TV series)
A genetic experiment escapes, leaving a trail of death.
Last updated
Chimera is a British science-fiction horror drama television mini-series produced by Zenith Productions and Anglia Films for ITV in 1991. It adapts Stephen Gallagher's 1982 novel of the same name, which deals with genetic engineering. Gallagher had previously turned the novel into a 90-minute audio drama for BBC Radio 4 in 1985. The series' theme music, "Roisin Dubh," was performed by the group Chameleon, with Nigel Hess as composer and arranger.
Though the story is set in rural Cumbria, filming took place in North Yorkshire. The village of Kettlewell was used for outdoor scenes, and the Jenner Clinic was represented by the Malham Tarn Field Studies Centre, a Grade II listed Georgian country house owned by the National Trust. Studio work was done at Shepperton Studios in Surrey. The series was later re-edited for release in the United States under the title Monkey Boy.
Plot
Tracy Pickford (Emer Gillespie) leaves her nursing job at a busy London A&E department to work at the Jenner Clinic in rural Cumbria. The clinic offers private fertility treatment, but despite the calm atmosphere, Tracy grows uneasy. She notices a secure, keypad-protected room in an outbuilding, told it contains live research animals but forbidden to enter. She also overhears Dr. Jenner (David Calder), the clinic's founder, meeting with mysterious officials about topics unrelated to the clinic's work.
One night, she sees a commotion as someone or something is brought to the clinic in a van. She cannot get a clear look before the figure is sedated and taken away, with Dr. Jenner scolding security for allowing "him" to escape. She is told a chimpanzee escaped from the lab, but the next morning she finds "HELP ME" scratched into the dirt in the van. Dr. Jenner calls Tracy in, admitting there is more to the clinic's work and promising to confide in her soon.
Feeling increasingly unsettled, she leaves a voicemail for her on-again, off-again boyfriend Peter Carson (John Lynch) in London, expressing her concerns. That night, an unseen attacker rampages through the clinic, killing all staff, including Dr. Jenner, and a patient named Mrs Forester (Liz Brailford). The attacker also starts a fire. Tracy is the last survivor, but when she goes outside and finds the bodies piled in the courtyard, she too is killed.
Background
The series follows Tracy Pickford, a nurse who takes a job at the Jenner Clinic in rural Cumbria, a private fertility treatment center. She becomes suspicious of a secure room and overhears Dr. Jenner meeting with mysterious officials. After witnessing a creature being brought in a van and finding "HELP ME" scrawled in the dirt, she leaves a voicemail for her boyfriend Peter Carson. That night, an unseen assailant kills all staff and patients, including Tracy, and sets a fire.
Peter travels to Cumbria and, with help from former researcher Diane Rhomer, uncovers the truth: Dr. Jenner, using government funding from Hennessey, created a human-chimpanzee hybrid named Chad. The hybrid, unable to speak due to his vocal cords being cut, escaped after Diane unlocked his cage to save him from being dissected alive. Chad hides at a farm, befriends the farmer's children, but kills their parents.
Production & Filming Locations
Although the narrative is set in the rural landscapes of Cumbria, the actual filming took place in North Yorkshire, where the village of Kettlewell supplied the outdoor village scenes. The Jenner Clinic's exterior was established at Malham Tarn Field Studies Centre, a Grade II listed Georgian country house in the care of the National Trust, lending the fictional fertility clinic an air of old-money respectability that contrasted sharply with the horrors concealed within. Interior and studio work was completed at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, a well-known production facility.
The series was a collaboration between Zenith Productions and Anglia Films, commissioned by ITV. The musical identity of the show was anchored by "Roisin Dubh," a track by Nigel Hess and Chameleon that underscored the mini-series' atmospheric dread. The combination of authentic rural Yorkshire locations, a stately National Trust property, and professional studio work gave the production a grounded, tactile quality that served the horror elements well.
Narrative & Thematic Core
At its heart, Chimera follows Tracy Pickford, a London A&E nurse who accepts a quieter post at the Jenner Clinic, a private fertility treatment facility in rural Cumbria. Her growing unease is triggered by a keypad-locked room supposedly housing research animals, secretive meetings between Dr. Jenner and unidentified government officials, and a night when an escaped creature is dragged back to the clinic in a van. The next morning, the words "HELP ME" are scratched into the dirt behind the vehicle.
After a voicemail to her boyfriend Peter Carson, Tracy is killed in a massacre that claims every other person at the clinic. Peter's subsequent investigation uncovers the clinic's true purpose: Dr. Jenner, funded by government official Hennessey, created a single human-chimpanzee hybrid named Chad as a prototype for a new species intended for slave labour, military use, and medical experimentation. When Jenner orders Chad's live dissection, the hybrid kills everyone present before fleeing into the countryside, triggering a military manhunt.
Cast & Character Ensemble
The mini-series assembled a strong British ensemble to bring its characters to life. Emer Gillespie anchors the story as Tracy Pickford, the nurse whose curiosity and moral instincts drive the narrative forward. David Calder portrays Dr. Jenner, the clinic's founder whose ambition curdles into cruelty.
John Lynch plays Peter Carson, Tracy's on-again, off-again boyfriend and a journalist whose contacts become vital to the investigation. Christine Kavanagh appears as Alison Wells, a former researcher who survived the massacre by being absent and who later returns to the clinic. Kenneth Cranham delivers a chilling performance as Hennessey, the government official whose funding and political protection enable Jenner's experiments.
Sebastian Shaw plays Dr. Liawski, a former colleague hiding in a Brighton nursing home, while Pippa Haywood is Diane Rhomer, another of Jenner's former associates. Douglas Mann embodies Chad, the hybrid whose vocal cords were severed as an infant, rendering him unable to speak despite his full comprehension of human language. Liz Brailford appears as Mrs Forester, a patient targeted as a surrogate for the next generation of hybrids.
