Creative Origins & the Road to Apple TV

Vince Gilligan has spoken about growing exhausted from crafting antagonists over a decade spanning Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. That fatigue became the seed for Pluribus. While working on Better Call Saul, he first sketched a scenario in which a single man became universally beloved after some world-altering event. He then reimagined the protagonist as a woman, specifically envisioning Rhea Seehorn in the role, and layered in the concept of a collective consciousness. To keep the premise feeling tangible, he grounded the hive mind in a plausible mechanism: a signal transmitted from space carrying RNA-encoding code that rewires human behavior. After Better Call Saul wrapped in August 2022, Gilligan pitched the project to Sony Pictures Television. The pitch ignited the first-ever bidding war over one of his properties, and Apple TV ultimately secured the rights in September 2022, attaching a two-season commitment. Seehorn accepted the lead before reading a single page of the script. Production Craft & Long-Range Storytelling

Filming for the first season took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from February through September 2024, under the working title Wycaro 339, with each episode carrying a reported budget of fifteen million dollars. The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike interrupted the writing process, forcing the writers' room to regroup and complete the final two episodes, and it also delayed the start of principal photography. Scheduling conflicts arising from the strike required executive producer Gordon Smith to step in and direct at least one episode. A notable distinction from Gilligan's earlier work is the depth of long-range planning. Where Breaking Bad's final-season machine-gun subplot nearly derailed the writers, Pluribus's four-season arc was mapped well in advance. The season-one finale, in which an atomic bomb is delivered to Carol, was a deliberate setup for the planned multi-season trajectory. That beat was not in the original draft; it was added after notes from Apple and Sony executives, a change Gilligan credits with producing a stronger conclusion.
