Overview
The series blends cel-shaded and computer animation in the style of Jack Kirby. It alters the original mythos by removing the Fantastic Four from The Galactus Trilogy, which forms the basis of the first three episodes. In this version, the Silver Surfer, whose memories of Norrin Radd have been partially restored by Thanos, protects Earth from Galactus because it reminds him of his home planet Zenn-La. Due to Fox broadcast standards, Thanos serves Lady Chaos rather than Death. The series uses serialized storytelling and tackles issues such as imperialism, slavery, non-violence, and environmental degradation. It alludes to the Golden Age of Science Fiction through episode titles from novels by Isaac Asimov and Joe Haldeman, and character names from Asimov and Doc Smith; one episode was written by Harlan Ellison. The series was canceled after one season, with eight episodes written for a second season before production shut down. According to series creator Larry Brody, cancellation resulted from a legal dispute between Marvel and Saban Entertainment.

Clear Vision LTD acquired the rights and released the set on May 11, 2009. The rights are currently owned by Disney Enterprises through BVS Entertainment and Jetix, as well as Marvel Animation, but no Region 1 DVD release is planned.
