Last Last One Forever and Ever

A live-action episode ends on an unofficial cliffhanger.

Last updated

"Last Last One Forever and Ever" (also known as "Live Action") is the tenth and final episode of the sixth season of the American animated television series Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and the 88th episode overall. It originally aired on Adult Swim on May 31, 2009, and features live-action versions of the main characters. The episode was considered for non-airing by then-Adult Swim vice president Mike Lazzo.

Plot

Frylock noticed the local water supply was flammable. He attempted to alert Master Shake, who was drinking from a garden hose, and Meatwad, who was washing himself at a car wash. An explosion followed. Shake and Frylock then went to their neighbor Carl's house.

Carl was in his pool holding sticks of dynamite. He ignored their warning and passed gas into the pool, triggering a massive blast visible from space. The scene cut to a live-action shot of Frylock reading a script. The script, credited to "Don" Shake, described the explosion events.

Frylock called it terrible. It turned out Shake had tried writing stories multiple times without earning any money, even though he had promised his roommate ten percent of future profits. Frylock, annoyed by Shake's lack of income, told him he had to move out. Shake went to the exercise room and sat by an exercise ball.

Meatwad's voice came from the ball. Meatwad agreed to help Shake write a story, which copied lines directly from SpongeBob SquarePants. Later, at Dr. Weird's Castle, Shake asked Carl for feedback on the story. Carl suggested adding scenes with lesbians and female breasts.

Meatwad strongly disagreed with those changes. Shake then crept toward Frylock, who was on Craigslist searching for a new roommate. Meatwad held up a sword. When Frylock turned around, Shake politely handed him the sword and said, "Here's your sword, I found it in my room." After that, Shake thought of a way to end his story.

Production

The episode was helmed by the show's creators, Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro, who have handled writing and directing duties for every installment of the series. It debuted on Adult Swim, Cartoon Network's late-night programming block, on May 31, 2009. The cast includes live-action appearances by David Long, Jr. as Carl, H. Jon Benjamin as Don Shake (the live-action Master Shake), T-Pain as Frylock, and Drake E. Stephens. T-Pain's dialogue occasionally uses Auto-Tune as a nod to his music, which heavily features the effect.

While most of the episode is live-action, the opening and closing scenes use the same animation style as the regular series. Mike Lazzo, an Adult Swim vice president, seriously considered keeping the episode off television, instead releasing it as a DVD extra or on YouTube. In 2008, Adult Swim ran a nationwide casting contest sponsored by Burger King to find a live-action Carl. The search kicked off in July 2008 at San Diego Comic-Con, where contestants dressed as Carl auditioned in person.

Fans could also submit audition videos through the Adult Swim website. Willis mentioned in an interview that several people were rejected for the part, including Kyle Gass of Tenacious D and Samuel L. Jackson. The winner was David Long, Jr., from Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. A bump aired by Adult Swim noted legal issues with casting an "outsider" in the role.

Home release

The "Last Last One Forever and Ever" episode first hit DVD as part of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force Volume Seven collection. This set, put out by Adult Swim and Warner Home Video on June 1, 2010, for Region 1, bundled it with five other season six episodes and five from season seven. Behind-the-scenes footage for this particular episode is included.

A key feature of the set is that every episode has completely uncensored dialogue, a first for the series on DVD. Madman Entertainment later issued the set in Region 4 on June 16, 2010. Digital versions of the episode, in both high definition and standard definition, are available through iTunes, the Xbox Live Marketplace, and Amazon Video.
