Reception
Critics were split on Urban Reign, according to Metacritic’s aggregate score. In Japan, Famitsu rated it 33 out of 40, with one nine and three eights. GamePro found the visuals and controls lacking but liked the many arcade-style multiplayer options. GameSpot called the story mode bland and unfairly difficult, making the game hard to endorse. IGN felt the artificial intelligence needed better fine-tuning. Eurogamer argued that as a roaming beat-’em-up, it offered no payoff like Ninja Gaiden or God of War, and as a one-on-one fighter, it lacked the depth or balance of Virtua Fighter 4 or SoulCalibur. GameRevolution suggested that with more depth across the board, it could have been a sleeper hit, but instead it remained simply a sleeper.
