Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shell Shock is a Gerstlauer Sky Fly ride located at Nickelodeon Universe inside the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. It debuted on March 17, 2012, and was the first installation of this ride model in the United States. Ride Entertainment Group, which manages Gerstlauer’s operations across the Western Hemisphere, handled the installation.
The queue is designed to resemble the Ninja Turtles’ underground sewer lair. Riders board one of twelve single-rider gondolas, each decorated with a turtle shell and weapons on the back. After the gondolas are lifted, the brakes release, allowing guests to control the rotation of their own vehicle. Because the boom is tilted, each revolution around the central tower carries riders up to 72 feet (22 meters) and back down, reaching speeds of 25 miles per hour (40 km/h).
On July 25, 2011, the Park Thoughts podcast interviewed Nickelodeon Universe’s marketing director, who confirmed a major new attraction was planned for 2012. The ride was officially announced on January 20, 2012, with an expected opening in March of that year. It replaced Tak Attack, which closed on November 14, 2011.
Shell Shock opened on March 17, 2012, several months before the premiere of the television series it is based on. That same day, Nickelodeon Universe hosted a “Be A Part of Turtles History” event to set a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of Ninja Turtles. The record was broken with 836 people dressed as Ninja Turtles gathered in front of the ride, surpassing the previous record of 786 set at Rutgers University in 2008.
