X-Men: Apocalypse

The ancient mutant Apocalypse awakens in 1983 to remake the world.

Last updated

It grossed $544 million worldwide against a $178 million budget, becoming the third highest-grossing X-Men film at the time.[1]

Making and release

The film opened in the United States on May 27, 2016, alongside Alice through the Looking Glass.[2] Before X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) reached theaters, Bryan Singer used Twitter in December 2013 to announce X-Men: Apocalypse.[3] On April 27, 2015, principal photography started in Montreal, Canada, and by late August 2015, first-unit production had concluded.[4] January 2016 saw additional filming.[4]

London hosted the film's world premiere on May 9, 2016.[5]

What the cited sources add

Tartaglione noted that it was the biggest Fox debut weekend ever in six markets and the best X-Men opening ever in 33 markets.[6] Andrew Dyce of Screen Rant detailed that the opening scenes set in ancient Egypt were heavily inspired by the 1955 film Land of the Pharaohs.[7] Dyce also noted that Apocalypse's ability to transfer his consciousness from body to body had a precedent in the 1990s comic story arc "The Twelve".[7] The Guardian reported that billboards in Los Angeles and New York showing Apocalypse choking Mystique drew criticism for advocating violence against women.[8]

Fox apologized for the billboard, stating they "didn't immediately realise the upsetting connotation of this image in print form".[9]
