The film grossed $1.921 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2021 and the highest-grossing Spider-Man film.[1]

Making and release

By August 2019, Disney and Sony had spent months discussing expanding their deal, with Disney asking for a 25–50% stake in future films Feige produced.[2][3] The plot initially considered Kraven the Hunter as the main antagonist but was abandoned because Sony wanted a solo film first.[4] Principal photography began in Atlanta by October 25, 2020, after Holland finished shooting Uncharted.[5] The film was released in the United States on December 17, 2021, after being pushed back from July 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[6]

In June 2017, Tom Holland stated that each film in the series would be set during a different year of Peter Parker's high school career, with the third installment taking place during his senior year.[7] Sony announced it would proceed without Marvel's involvement, but a new agreement was reached at the end of September 2019 under which Disney/Marvel would co-finance 25% of the film for a 25% equity stake.[2][8] By the time Sony made its announcement in August 2019, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers were already writing the screenplay for the third film.[9]

The same article stated that Thomas Haden Church returns as Sandman, mostly in his Sandman form, with existing footage from Spider-Man 3 used at the end.[11] A Screen Rant article from December 2021 noted that Tom Hardy returns as Eddie Brock in a cameo following the Venom: Let There Be Carnage post-credits scene.[12]
