Power Rangers (film)

A 2017 reboot of the Power Rangers franchise.

Power Rangers (film)

Power Rangers (marketed as Saban's Power Rangers) is a 2017 American superhero movie that belongs to the Power Rangers franchise owned by Saban Entertainment, which itself draws from the Japanese Super Sentai series. As a reboot of the franchise, it loosely follows the events of "Day of the Dumpster," the first episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Dean Israelite directed the film, with a screenplay by John Gatins. The cast includes Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Banks. The story centers on a group of teenagers who acquire superhuman abilities and must defend Earth from an ancient enemy that has awakened. Haim Saban, the franchise's creator, returned as a producer through his investment firm.

The film had its premiere in Berlin, Germany on March 22, 2017, and Lionsgate Films released it in the United States one week later. Critics gave it mixed reviews, and it performed poorly at the box office, earning $142.5 million worldwide against a production budget of $100–105 million. The intention was to launch a series of sequels, but those plans were abandoned after the film's commercial failure, leading Saban to sell the franchise rights to Hasbro. Another reboot entered development, but Hasbro ended its partnership with Netflix in 2024, causing those plans to be scrapped. In 2025, Hasbro announced that a different reboot is in development as a television series with Walt Disney Studios.

Plot

During the Cenozoic era, a team of warriors called the Power Rangers protects the Zeo Crystal and all life on Earth. The Green Ranger, Rita Repulsa, turns against them and tries to use the Crystal to conquer the universe. The Red Ranger, Zordon, survives her attack and hides five Power Coins. He then orders his robot assistant, Alpha 5, to trigger a meteor strike that kills Zordon, the dinosaurs, and sends Rita to the ocean floor, stopping her plan.

Sixty-five million years later, in the town of Angel Grove, high school football star Jason Scott gets kicked off the team and placed under house arrest after a prank goes wrong. In detention, he meets the nerdy Billy Cranston and former cheerleader Kimberly Hart. Billy is there for experimenting with explosives, and Kimberly for cyberbullying. After Jason defends Billy from a bully named Colt Wallace, Billy offer
