The Faculty was produced after the success of Scream (1996), when Miramax Films bought an earlier script by David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel. Bob Weinstein and Harvey Weinstein brought in Kevin Williamson to rewrite the dialogue and add characters, making it more 'hip'. Williamson was originally set to direct but chose to direct his own script Teaching Mrs. Tingle instead, and Robert Rodriguez was brought in to direct. The film is set in the fictional town of Herrington, Ohio, but was shot in Austin, San Marcos, Dallas, and Lockhart, Texas. Clea Duvall later recalled the night shoots as 'so much fun' and like being in 'an alternate universe'.

Only after the commercial triumph of Scream in 1996 did Miramax Films acquire the material and push it quickly toward production. Bob and Harvey Weinstein retained Kevin Williamson to overhaul the dialogue and inject new characters, aiming for a fresher, more contemporary voice while preserving the original story's bones. Williamson was initially slated to direct but declined in order to helm his own project, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, and Robert Rodriguez stepped in to both direct and edit the picture. Although the narrative is set in the fictional Ohio town of Herrington, principal photography actually took place across four Texas locations: Austin, San Marcos, Dallas, and Lockhart. Clea DuVall later described the shoot as a thrilling, almost surreal experience, noting that the predominantly night work made the cast feel as though they were living inside an alternate universe while crafting a fun sci-fi horror film.

Story & the Alien Invasion Plot

The film centers on a cluster of teenagers at Herrington High School who grow increasingly convinced that their faculty is being covertly replaced by extraterrestrial entities. The crisis ignites when Principal Drake is attacked by football coach Joe Willis and then stabbed by drama teacher Mrs. Olson. School-newspaper photographer Casey Connor and editor Delilah Profitt discover a bizarre parasite on the football field, which science teacher Mr. Furlong identifies as a mesozoan. After Furlong attempts to infect the students, Zeke Tyler kills him with a homemade substance he later reveals to be raw powdered caffeine, a compound that dehydrates the creatures and proves lethal to them. The group's strategy to eliminate the alien queen collapses when seemingly naive transfer student Marybeth Hutchinson reveals herself as the true queen, explaining that her species is invading because their home planet is dying. Casey ultimately defeats her by driving the caffeine directly into her eye just as she begins to infect him, halting the invasion.

Both the score and a separate soundtrack album showcasing indie and alternative rock artists were issued at the time of the film's debut. In March 2023, the label Intrada released Beltrami's complete score as a standalone album, introducing the full orchestral work to a new generation of listeners.
