From Concept to Screen: Production & Development

What eventually became Dork Hunters from Outer Space began life under a different name. In 2005, the project was announced as Triple Threat from Outer Space, carrying a budget of six and a half million US dollars and a target broadcast date of September 2006. The original concept was narrower: three alien girls—Star, Mac, and Nicki—pretending to be human. By the time the final format was locked in, as confirmed in a December 2005 Animation Magazine article, the roster had shifted. Star was reimagined as the male character Romeo, Mac became a boy, and human twins Eddie and Angie were added to the team. The production was a transatlantic effort: German studio BKN International set up a London-based subsidiary, BKN New Media Ltd., to oversee the project. Jeff "Swampy" Marsh served as director of production, while Sean Catherine Derek, previously known for her work on Batman: The Animated Series, co-developed the show alongside creator Rick Ungar. Animation was handled by Dreamforest Animation in the Philippines. The initial order of twenty-six episodes was expanded to thirty-six by February 2007.

A Team of Five: Characters & Premise

The series is set in Paramus, New Jersey, where fourteen-year-old twins Eddie and Angie attend high school. Eddie is the clever one, while Angie is the team's fashionista, passionate about clothes and makeup. Their unlikely allies are three sixteen-year-old extraterrestrials—Mac, Nikki, and Romeo—who ended up on Earth after taking a wrong turn at Saturn. GMTV in the United Kingdom and RTL II in Germany were announced as the series' initial broadcasters in February 2007. Although the plan was to premiere on RTL II in late 2007, the show instead debuted on 26 March 2008, airing every weekday. The international rollout accelerated quickly: by April 2008, Network Ten in Australia, SABC in South Africa, and CTC in Russia had all secured broadcast rights in their respective territories. In Spain, the series found a home on Clan TVE. The following January, Jetix acquired pay-TV rights for the show in the United Kingdom, broadening its availability beyond free-to-air. Dork Hunters from Outer Space proved a strong performer on GMTV, finishing as the channel's second most popular show among children aged four to nine for the full year of 2008, with an audience share hovering around thirty-eight percent. In November 2008, it also ranked as the number two show in share across all children aged four to fifteen. The franchise extended beyond television: BKN announced a feature film, Dork Hunters and the Pirates of Tortuga Island, on 15 May 2008. Released on DVD in the United States by Image Entertainment on 9 March 2010, the film was essentially a feature-length edit of the "Summer Vacation" three-episode arc. Critical reception was mixed; Brian Costello of Common Sense Media awarded the film a single star, citing the main characters' stereotypical personalities. On the home-media front, Magna Home Entertainment issued two Australian DVD sets—The Dorkinator and Dorks in Black—each containing nine episodes, in May 2009, while Image Entertainment released a three-disc set covering all thirty-six episodes in February 2010.
