Gameplay
The game is set in the World Cup, offering a choice of 32 national teams. The tournament consists of seven matches, arranged into two groups of four teams and a final. As an arcade title, a single loss ends the game unless the player uses the continue option, which allows increasing team strength or speed up to three times. Ties are resolved by penalty shoot-outs. New features include a cross pass button and the ability to pass forward to a teammate, though the player cannot control pass direction. A dribble boost increases player speed to reach the opponent's area and execute a powerful shot.
Reception
Critics gave Tecmo World Soccer '96 mixed reviews. AllGame's Kyle Knight criticized the visuals, audio, controls, and other design aspects, recommending other Neo Geo soccer games instead. MAN!AC's Andreas Knauf compared it unfavorably to Super Sidekicks, citing poor audiovisual presentation and a lack of innovations, calling it an insignificant soccer game. Mega Fun's Ulf Schneider had mixed feelings about the graphics, sound, and other elements. Brazilian magazine Super Game Power also compared it to Super Sidekicks but praised its visuals, sound, controls, and fun factor.
