Gameplay
Ninja Gaiden II introduces a combat system that allows protagonist Ryu Hayabusa to dismember enemies, severing limbs and tearing bodies apart, covering his weapon and surroundings in blood. The game contains more gore and graphic violence than its predecessor. Dismemberment weakens or slows an enemy depending on whether an arm or leg is severed, but does not necessarily kill it; injured enemies may resort to suicide tactics, such as pinning Ryu down and planting an incendiary shuriken on him, forcing the player to quickly finish opponents using new Obliteration Techniques before the enemy gains the upper hand. This mechanic can also be triggered against boss characters. The player is as vulnerable to attack as enemies during fights. Ryu can absorb essence released from slain enemies, which heals him, restores ki, or increases cash. Essence can be deliberately drawn in to unleash powerful Ultimate Techniques. A red bar representing lasting damage builds on the right of Ryu's health bar when he takes damage; after clearing an area, health recharges only to the point where the red bar starts. Herbs of Spiritual Life and Save Statues can heal this lasting damage. After combat, Ryu performs a chiburui—swatting blood off his weapon—with a unique animation for each weapon. Ryu can block attacks, though enemies can break his guard, or dodge via a Reverse Wind dash. The game includes camera rotation and the ability to charge Ultimate Techniques without essence, both elements from the original game's Hurricane Pack.
Plot
A year after the events of Ninja Gaiden Black, the blacksmith Muramasa opens a new shop in Tokyo. CIA agent Sonia arrives looking for Ryu Hayabusa, but the Black Spider Ninja Clan attacks and takes her. Ryu saves Sonia, who tells him the clan is attacking Hayabusa Village to steal the Demon Statue. Returning home, Ryu sees his father Joe Hayabusa fighting Genshin, the Black Spider leader. The statue is stolen by Elizébet, the Queen of the Greater Fiends and Ruler of Blood, and Joe orders Ryu to recover it. Ryu and Sonia chase Elizébet across the globe, battling Black Spider Ninjas, Fiends, and three other Greater Fiends: Alexei, the Graceful Ruler of Lightning; Volf, the Invincible Ruler of Storms; and Zedonius, the Malevolent Ruler of Flame. In South America, Ryu finds Elizébet offering the statue to the Infernal High Priest Dagra Dai to resurrect the ancient Archfiend Vazdah. Ryu defeats Elizébet, but she vows to return. Genshin reveals the fiends plan to raise the Archfiend from Mount Fuji in Japan, a place tied to both the Black Spider Clan and the Dragon Lineage. Ryu returns home and warns Sonia not to follow. At Mount Fuji, Ayane gives him the Eye of the Dragon, a gift from Joe, which he uses to form the True Dragon Sword. At the crater’s entrance, Ryu fights Genshin, who admits he never cared about the Archfiend and only wanted this duel. Ryu kills Genshin and leaps into the erupting Mount Fuji as Elizébet appears over Genshin’s body, planning to revive him as a fiend.
Development and release
The first hints of Ninja Gaiden II appeared on 11 September 2007, when screenshots briefly surfaced on the Japanese Xbox 360 website before being pulled down. The very next day, Microsoft used its Tokyo Game Show press conference to announce the game as an Xbox 360 exclusive. Director Tomonobu Itagaki told the crowd, "Now please enjoy the world's best action game, running on the world's best hardware." A full trailer debuted at the show on 20 September. Localization duties fell to Team Ninja's Andrew Szymanski, working with AltJapan Co., Ltd. A demo hit Xbox Live in Japan on 31 May 2008, followed by Europe and the US on 8 June. The game never got a German release because it lacked a USK rating. A modified version, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, arrived on PlayStation 3 in 2009 and later on PlayStation Vita in 2013. In a 2021 interview, Team Ninja head Fumihiko Yasuda explained that the original Xbox source code could not be recovered, and there were no plans to remaster either Ninja Gaiden Black or Ninja Gaiden II. However, an Unreal Engine 5 remaster of Sigma 2, called Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, was built to recreate the feel of the original. It brought back the original upgrade system and higher violence, boosted enemy counts, and cut some Sigma 2 bosses and modes. The game was announced and released on 23 January 2025 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.
Reception
Ninja Gaiden II received generally favorable reviews on Metacritic. Famitsu scored it 34 out of 40, while Famitsu X360 gave it 36 out of 40. GameZone rated it 8.8 out of 10, calling it a must-play action game. Edge gave it eight out of ten, describing it as fascinating and hugely replayable. GamePro called it a slick and thrill-packed action game but noted finicky camera and uneven difficulty. GameSpot nominated it for Least Improved Sequel in its 2008 awards, which went to Dynasty Warriors 6. As of 28 August 2008, the game had sold over one million units.
