Gameplay
Tōkidenshō Angel Eyes is a two-dimensional fighting game with an all-female cast. The arcade version includes eight playable characters, such as a biker girl, a volleyball player, a school uniform girl, a ninja, and a fighter who uses a stuffed teddy bear. Attacks include standard punches and kicks, special moves, and techniques. A unique system, called "reverse combo correction" by fans and a planner inexperienced in fighting games, causes combo damage to increase as the chain continues, enabling instant-kill combos. "Homing jumps" are special jumps that thrust the player into the opponent.
Development and release
Development began in 1994 after the cancellation of Ninja Gaiden II on the Neo Geo. Tōkidenshō Angel Eyes was among the first fighting games to feature an all-female roster. Some characters are traditional 2D sprites, while others are created from pre-rendered 3D models. The PlayStation version adds 2D renditions of Kiriko, Reika, and Lina as unlockable characters. The arcade release was exclusive to Japan in June 1996. The PlayStation port, released on December 11, 1997, includes proper intros and endings, a fully voiced story mode, additional unlockable characters, and an arranged soundtrack. A drama CD and a soundtrack CD were also released. The PlayStation version was re-released on the Japanese PlayStation Network's Game Archives on November 12, 2008, and Hamster Corporation released it for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in October 2022 as part of their Arcade Archives series.
