Plot
Ray, an Aqutallion warrior, sets out from a tiny island alone to stop Homncruse, a destructive evil force. He later gathers his fellow warriors Tina, Cody, Leona, and Dan, and even builds a settlement for those harmed by Homncruse. The enemies they face include silly ones like Cat Boo and Badbad, as well as more threatening elite generals. At first, all five teens hold the lowest warrior rank, Pennon. To defeat Homncruse, each must pass a trial at a hidden temple to earn the advanced rank of Banalet. Dan is different because he comes from the Prosperous Wise Man clan of Aqutallion. Once Ray, Tina, Cody, and Leona become Banalet and combine their powers through Dan, Aqutallion is revived, granting them immense strength. The group also has help from eleven Kustera members who can temporarily fight in their place. Though the Kustera are meant as backup, they are essential to the story. In the same temples where the Aqutallions earn Banalet status, a special warp icon only usable by Kustera leads to a dungeon filled with valuable treasures.
Reception
Secret of the Stars received moderately positive reviews. The four reviewers of Electronic Gaming Monthly criticized the graphics but felt the highly involving story compensated. GamePro praised the monster designs, calling it 'X-Files with a sense of humor.' They considered the game's winning feature its combination of accessible gameplay mechanics with heavy challenge, noting that kiddie characters and an easy-to-use RPG design appeal to beginners while the epic length and multitude of monsters challenge experienced RPG players.
