Gameplay

Unlike other Monster Rancher titles, Monster Rancher Battle Card GB does not allow importing content via CDs. Instead, the player takes a short personality test to determine their starting deck, then wins additional cards by defeating opponents and new monster cards by defeating dungeon bosses. A code system exists but only provides a few cards for a single monster and some general support. Each player's deck contains three monster cards and fifty attack, defense, or support cards. Monster cards start in play, have hit points, and are classified as ground or air type. Attacks are specific to one monster breed, defense cards may be breed-specific, and support cards are also available. Using cards typically requires paying an activation cost in guts. The game begins with a coin flip to decide who goes first or second, and each player draws five cards. A turn proceeds through a draw phase (drawing to five cards), a general phase (attacking or using support cards, with the defender able to use defense cards), and a discard phase (discarding cards to become guts). A monster is defeated when its HP reaches zero, and a player loses when all monsters are gone or they cannot draw a card. The player travels to dungeons to collect sacred stones for generating new monster cards and fights ranked battles to increase their level and unlock new dungeons. Each dungeon has randomly generated floors, invisible guardians that challenge the player automatically, normal NPCs to challenge, and a boss. After reaching the maximum rank and completing all dungeons, a new dungeon appears; defeating its boss allows starting a new game+, where the normal deck is locked until the final dungeon. There is no story or objectives beyond unlocking content.
