The asura Andasuran, determined to impose his own tongue, Karkhimukhi Jwala, has captured the Tamil poet Nakkeeran and other literary figures, actively working to suppress the Tamil language and its growing popularity. Murugan takes up arms against Andasuran and liberates the poets. In gratitude, Tamil dynasties such as the Pallavas and the Cholas honor him with the title Tamizh Kadavul Murugan, the God of the Tamils, recognizing him as the saviour of their language. Eventually, Shiva dispatches the revered poet Avvaiyar Paati to persuade Murugan to return to Kailayam. Murugan tests her with a series of questions; when she gently inquires about his grievances, he opens up and recounts every wound of the Ganesha contest. Avvaiyar offers both praise and counsel, and Murugan, recognizing his own fault, reconciles with his family and goes back to the celestial abode.
