Pythia was formed in London by vocalist Emily Alice Ovenden, drummer Marc Dyos, keyboardist Richard Holland, guitarists Ross White and Tim Neale, and bassist Andy Nixon-Corfield. Their debut show was supporting Leaves' Eyes at the Underworld in Camden in 2008. Their debut single 'Sarah (Bury Her)' was released in September 2009, followed by their debut album Beneath the Veiled Embrace in October 2009, which featured actor Brian Blessed reciting a Henry Newbolt poem ('The Last of the Light Brigade') on the track 'Army of the Damned'. The band performed at Bloodstock Open Air in August 2009 and appeared as studio guests on the Bruce Dickinson rock show on BBC 6 Music in May 2010.

The band released their second album The Serpent's Curse in February 2012, with artwork by Jan Yrlund (Darkgrove Design). In 2012, guitarist Tim Neale left and was replaced by Oz Wright; in June 2013, keyboardist Richard Holland was replaced by Marcus Matusiak. Their third album Shadows of a Broken Past was released in December 2014, again featuring Brian Blessed on the track 'Sword of Destiny'. During production, the band reported unrest that caused them to go silent, later resolved via a statement. In October 2015, Emily Ovenden left to focus on her new group Khronicles, and Sophie Dorman was announced as the new lead singer.

Pythia continued with line-up changes, including bassist Mark Harrington replaced by Ash Porter in 2016, and guitarist Oz Wright replaced by Jamie Hunt in 2017. They released their fourth album The Solace of Ancient Earth on 17 May 2019, and in 2025 released the EP V1 PT 1 Unhallowed.
