Karen Moras
Australian distance freestyle swimmer and Olympic bronze medalist.
Karen Lynne Moras, also known by her married name Karen Stephenson, was an Australian distance freestyle swimmer active in the 1960s and 1970s. She won a bronze medal in the 400-metre freestyle at the 1968 Summer Olympics and set multiple world records, though she never captured Olympic gold. Trained by Forbes Carlile, she made her international debut as a 14-year-old prodigy. At the 1970 Commonwealth Games she dominated the 200-, 400- and 800-metre freestyle events, breaking her own world record in the 800-metre freestyle. She later left Carlile's group to train under Don Talbot after Shane Gould joined the squad. Moras competed at the 1972 Summer Olympics but did not reach any finals, and retired after those Games. She was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985.
