Kornelia Ender
East German swimmer who won four Olympic golds in 1976.
Kornelia Ender (later Matthes now Grummt) is a former East German swimmer who at the 1976 Summer Olympics became the first woman to win four gold medals at a single Games, all in world record times. She had earlier won three silver medals as a 13-year-old at the 1972 Olympics. It was later proven that East German team doctors had systematically administered steroids to athletes, and Ender exhibited symptoms of steroid use in 1976. She acknowledged in 1991 that team doctors and coaches had given her numerous injections of drugs, though she said she did not know what they were.
