Making and release
The soft launch later expanded to Finland, Sweden, and other countries for iOS in January 2018.[2] Landscape mode and joystick controls replaced the original portrait mode and tap controls.[2] Frank Keienburg, the General Manager for Brawl Stars, explained that the team prioritized maintaining strategic depth while eliminating superfluous content.[3] A 522-day soft launch period saw extensive modifications to nearly every game element.[4]
An iOS-only soft launch in Canada commenced on 15 June 2017.[4] The official worldwide release date was 12 December 2018.[5] During its debut week, the game generated US$10 million in revenue, and within its first month, that figure reached US$63 million.[5] Tencent Games handled the mainland China release of Brawl Stars, which occurred on 9 June 2020.[5]
What the cited sources add
A Newsweek article from November 2018 reported that the soft launch lasted 522 days and involved massive reworks.[6] The same article noted that Keienburg said the team was inspired by League of Legends and Overwatch.[6] A Polygon review from December 2018 described Gem Grab as the core three-on-three experience.[7] That review also noted Showdown is a 10-player battle royale available in solo and duos.[7]
Harry Slater of Pocket Gamer awarded the game a score of 3 out of 5 and was critical of the Showdown mode.[8]
