AUSCAR category
Unlike the pure space-frame chassis of NASCAR, AUSCARs were built on Australian Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon road car chassis, making them right-hand-drive and requiring them to race clockwise on oval tracks. This placed the driver farthest from the outside retaining walls, in contrast to the left-hand-drive, anticlockwise NASCAR vehicles. From the EB model onward (which reintroduced the Ford V8 to Australia in 1991), Falcons ran the 5.0L V8. Holden teams could use the Group A 4.9L V8 but without the weight reduction that came in Group A racing, and the higher cost meant all Holden competitors used the 5.0L engine. They used a Goodyear Eagle control road tyre buffed down to about 2 mm of tread, narrower than NASCAR's purpose-built slicks.
