Characteristics

At least three galaxies are involved in the gravitational interaction: IC 2431 NED01 (PGC 200245), IC 2431 NED02 (NSA 135647), and IC 2431 NED03 (PGC 200246). A fourth galaxy, PGC 200247, may also be part of the interaction. As they draw closer, gravitational forces tear them apart, a process common in the universe. The galaxies show a tumultuous mixture of star formation and tidal distortions. A thick dust cloud obscures the center, while light from a background galaxy pierces its outer extremities. The system exhibits thermally-dominated X-ray emission in excess of expectations based on its star formation rate. IC 2431 is classified as a Markarian Galaxy (Mrk 1224), with a core bright in ultraviolet rays. Carbon monoxide may be present in the interacting regions, and the system possibly contains an active nucleus producing ionized gas outflows.
