U Camelopardalis
A semiregular carbon star with a spherical gas shell.
U Camelopardalis is a semiregular variable star in Camelopardalis, about 3,000 light-years from Earth. Its apparent visual magnitude is roughly 8, making it invisible to the unaided eye. A carbon star with a C-N5 spectral type, it appears strikingly red due to carbon compounds in its atmosphere. The Hubble Space Telescope imaged a nearly perfect spherical gas shell surrounding the star in 2012.
