Star Wars Battle Pod

A 2014 arcade rail shooter based on the original trilogy.

Bandai Namco Games developed and published the arcade rail shooter Star Wars Battle Pod, which launched in 2014. The game debuted at New York Comic Con on October 8, 2014, and is set within the Star Wars universe.

Players can take on six scenarios, most of which recreate key battles from the original trilogy. In the Battle of Yavin, the player flies an X-wing to destroy the Death Star before it can fire on Yavin 4. The Battle of Hoth puts the player in a snowspeeder, helping to evacuate the planet from Imperial forces. A speeder run on Endor aids Han Solo in reaching the shield generator. The Battle of Endor places the player in the Millennium Falcon, aiming to destroy the second Death Star. One mission, Vader's Revenge, departs from the films: set right after the first Death Star’s destruction, the player controls Darth Vader, trying to stop Rebels from salvaging the superlaser core, with the option to eliminate Han Solo. A later version adds a The Force Awakens scene, where the player pilots a T-70 X-wing over Takodana to protect General Leia’s transport from First Order ships.

The arcade cabinet has two versions: a larger environmental model with a dome screen, and a smaller sit-down unit with a flat-screen TV.

Lore & Background

The game consists of multiple scenarios that correspond with major battles in the original trilogy. There are six scenarios: The Battle of Yavin from Star Wars where the player is placed in an X-wing attacking the Death Star; The Battle of Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back where the player pilots a snowspeeder to assist in the evacuation of Hoth; a speeder run through Endor where the player helps Han Solo make it to the shield generator; and the Battle of Endor from Return of the Jedi, which places the player in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon to try to destroy the Death Star II. One mission does not follow the storyline of the movies but sets its own path: Vader's Revenge, which takes place immediately after the destruction of the first Death Star at Yavin where the player plays as Darth Vader trying to prevent the Rebels from salvaging the still-functional core of the Death Star's superlaser. Another version of the game adds a scene from The Force Awakens, where the player pilots a T-70 X-wing against First Order ships on Takodana to protect General Leia's transport.
