Lore & Background
Courage was born in Philadelphia to a Scottish father and a French-American mother. His father later sold insurance for Metropolitan Life and moved the family to New Jersey, and the family moved often as he was promoted.
His musical gift was encouraged early: his father had him learn the bugle and later bought him a cornet. He liked to play by ear rather than as written, which frustrated his piano teachers.
