The Great Fox Commission
A fortress in the sky, commissioned for a crew that refused to stay grounded.
The Great Fox Commission refers to the historical process by which the massive mobile fortress that would become the Star Fox team's operational base was designed, built, and delivered to the mercenary crew led by Fox McCloud. Rather than a single dramatic event, the commission spanned a period of engineering work, government negotiation, and crew integration, transforming a group of freelance pilots into a properly equipped unit with a home in the sky.
In the broader Star Fox narrative, the Great Fox is far more than a transport ship; it is the command center, the hangar, the mess hall, and the symbol of the team's identity. The commissioning of this vessel marks the moment the Star Fox crew stopped being a collection of solo pilots and became, in every practical sense, a fleet.

Lore & Background
The Star Fox team began as a loose collective of elite pilots—Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad, and Poo—operating independently before drawing the attention of larger powers. The need for a shared base, a place to coordinate missions and deploy their Arwings in formation, drove the push to commission a vessel of unprecedented scale. The Great Fox was the answer: a self-sustaining mobile platform capable of long-range operations, housing crew quarters, a command bridge, and a hangar bay large enough for multiple fighters.
Peppy Hare, Fox's mentor and a veteran of earlier conflicts, took the helm as captain. His experience with military-grade vessels made him the natural choice to integrate the Great Fox into the team's workflow. The ship's design prioritized versatility: it could serve as a forward operating base, a rapid-response transport, and a defensive platform, all while remaining maneuverable enough to keep pace with the Arwings during combat.
Across the franchise, the Great Fox's role shifts subtly. In the original SNES title it is the quiet backdrop to the pilots' sorties. By Star Fox 64 it becomes a character in its own right, with a bridge crew, internal corridors, and a presence that anchors the story's pacing. Later entries—Star Fox Assault, Star Fox 64 3D, and the cancelled Star Fox Zero—expand its functionality, showing it engaging in direct combat, deploying additional craft, and serving as the narrative's primary setting between missions. The commission, in retrospect, was the single decision that gave the Star Fox team a home and a purpose beyond individual glory.
Reader's Guide
ARCHIVE NOTE: Cornerian Military-Historical Society, Recovered Records Division. The following is a reconstruction of the Great Fox commissioning timeline, cross-referenced across at least six source materials. Expect contradictions.
The earliest reference to the Great Fox appears in the 1993 SNES title, where it functions as the team's staging base between missions. No construction sequence is shown; the ship simply exists, fully operational, as Peppy's command platform. The 1995-1998 manga series, Star Fox: The Adventures of Fox McCloud, offers the most detailed backstory, depicting the crew operating without a shared base before the Great Fox enters the picture. The manga implies a government-contracted build, though it never names the shipyard.
Star Fox 64 (1997) is where the Great Fox becomes a true set piece—bridge scenes, internal corridors, the deployment sequence. The cancelled Star Fox 2 (1995) reportedly featured extended Great Fox gameplay, but no public material survives to confirm specifics. Star Fox Assault (GBA, 2005) shows the vessel in active combat, firing its own weapons, which contradicts the more passive role in the N64 title. Star Fox 64 3D (2017) largely mirrors the N64 presentation.
The 2002 anime, Star Fox: Guardians of the Earth, retcons the team's origin and implies the Great Fox was a military asset before being transferred to the mercenary crew. This conflicts with the manga's framing. I flag both as unreliable.
FAN MARGIN NOTE: Nobody ever showed us the invoice. I want to know who signed the check.
Did You Know?
- Peppy Hare serves as the Great Fox's captain across virtually every appearance, making him the only character consistently tied to the ship's operation rather than its fighter wing.
- The cancelled Star Fox 2 was reportedly planning dedicated Great Fox gameplay segments, suggesting the ship was intended to be far more than a narrative backdrop in that entry.
- In the 1995-1998 manga series, the Great Fox is shown in contexts the video games never explore, including civilian-adjacent missions, hinting at a broader operational history.
