Cover athlete

Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers appears as the cover athlete, replacing Roy Halladay from MLB 2K11. Verlander won both the AL Cy Young Award and the AL MVP Award in 2011. The Perfect Game Challenge is a competition within the game where players compete to pitch a perfect game. MLB Today Season Mode is available, and Franchise Mode allows a player to manage a team through multiple MLB seasons, including signing free agents, making trades, drafting players, and setting rosters for the major league team and its minor league affiliates. Franchise Mode is less in-depth than MLB Today Season Mode, and more than one game may be played per day. Players can edit their players' abilities unlimited times, potentially making an entire team perfect, and can also edit contract values and adjust sliders or difficulty during a franchise. MLB 2K12 makes pitcher and batter interactions more realistic, with certain pitches increasing or decreasing in effectiveness based on player strengths and weaknesses. The game introduces a new throwing system and variation and realism in hits, along with improved gameplay, AI, graphics, and lighting. All real-life MLB logos, uniforms, and ballparks are included.

End of the Series

On May 22, 2012, 2K Sports gave signals that MLB 2K12 would mark the end of the MLB 2K series, as the game was left off the list for 2K's 2013 fiscal year. A spokesman for Take Two stated that the legacy Major League Baseball agreement would sunset in fiscal 2013 and that MLB 2K12 was the last offering under that agreement, with no further comment at that time. However, on January 9, 2013, 2K Sports announced a new agreement with Major League Baseball, the Major League Baseball Players Association, and Major League Baseball Advanced Media to release Major League Baseball 2K13, which came out on March 5, 2013, and became the final installment of the series.
