Sporting Clube de Macau, also called Sporting Macau or simply Sporting, is a professional football club in Macau that plays in the Liga de Elite. It was established on 22 September 1926 as the 25th branch of Sporting Clube de Portugal.
The club’s first leaders were President Henrique Nolasco da Silva, Secretary Francisco Borralho, Treasurer Angelo Rosary, and alternates Dr. Horacio Carvalho, Pedro Pereira Leite, and Mário Ribeiro. Among its past presidents was António Conceição, the first Macanese athlete to become Portuguese National Champion in the 5x80 meters velocity relay races, in 1928 and 1930. He returned to Macau in the late 1930s, later coached the Macau team, and became club president in 1951. During his presidency, he sent Augusto Rocha and Joaquim Pacheco to Sporting, where both were selected for the Portugal national team.
After a period of inactivity, the club was reactivated in 1951 by António Conceição, Adelino Serra, Major Acacio Cabrera Henriques, and Mario Abreu. In the 1960s, Eduardo Atraca played for the club and later became its president in the 1980s, a decade when Sporting won the Macau championship. In the 1990s, President Fernando Lopes led the team to another league title. The club’s membership included the two people who reactivated it in 1951, two of its presidents, and António Conceição Júnior, the son of António Conceição. The club then went dormant for another 20 years.
On 4 June 2008, António Conceição Júnior took on the challenge of reviving Branch 25 of Sporting Clube de Portugal to honor his father. The first project was identifying Sportinguistas in Macau. On 25 November 2008, an extraordinary general meeting admitted new members and scheduled elections. On 15 February 2009, 40 of 54 eligible members voted. The club was officially reactivated in 2009 and grew to over 100 members, with António Conceição Júnior serving as president since then. On 5 June 2009, a general assembly approved updated statutes, replacing those from 10 March 1951. The new statutes were published in the Official Gazette, formalizing registration with the Institute of Sport and the Macau Football Association.
The club launched a football team that debuted on 19 August 2009 in the 2nd Division, playing seven-a-side with a size 4 ball. This competition, mandatory for all new teams, included 92 clubs and 18 groups.
