Born in Lisbon on 1 October 1947, Aurélio Pereira began his football career as a youth player at Sporting CP, later playing for Operário and Fofó. While working as a salesman, he coached Fofó in his spare time, leading the club to national championships. Responding to a challenge from former Sporting CP player Hilário, he returned to the club and coached youth football for over twenty years.

In 1988, Pereira created the Recruitment and Training Department at Sporting CP, building a national network of scouts that systematized talent identification. This network, which grew from an earlier smaller operation under his supervision, enabled Sporting CP to discover players such as Emílio Peixe, Luís Figo, Simão Sabrosa, Ricardo Quaresma, Nani, and Cristiano Ronaldo. As the Sporting Academy developed and the department professionalized, Pereira shifted from a pure talent spotter to a trainer who regularly brought new players into the club's teams.

Pereira died on 8 April 2025 at age 77. He was the brother of Carlos Pereira, a former Sporting CP player and coach. Pereira published a book, Ver para Crer – Memórias de Descoberta e Formação de Talento, in 2021.

He received the UEFA Order of Merit in 2018 and the Quinas de Ouro trophy from the Portuguese Football Federation in 2023. His legacy endures in the continued operation of the department he founded and in the careers of the hundreds of players he scouted and coached.
